Free speech and free flow of information on the internet are being threatened by The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and The Protect IP Act (PIPA), two bills currently being considered by the US government. These corporate lobbyist supported bills will give unprecedented control to corporations and the government. Both bills could easily be abused. The Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMAC) already exists and many user-generated content websites abide to it and have even shown examples of rights holders abusing it or agreements made. Blocking content they don't even own.
While the Obama administration has come out against SOPA, effectively shelving it indefinitely, PIPA is still going forward in the senate and the vote on it is scheduled for January 24th.
If you are in the US, please call your Congressmen and tell them you oppose SOPA and PIPA. You can also write them at AmericanCensorship.org. Even if your congresspeople do NOT support these bills you should still contact them to voice your support for their position.
